Science Action Club: Bring afterschool programs to your school

Invite all educators (formal and informal) interested in offering a spring after-school club for middle school students to join us for a:

• FREE TRAINING that offers• FREE CURRICULUM andFREE MATERIALSThese science and nature training units were designed by the California Academy of Sciences to spark curiosity and wonder, build scientific skills, help middle school students develop STEM identities, and provide them an opportunity to participate in citizen science.


March 9, 9am-2pm: Bird Scouts

This training unit explores feathers, flight, and the features that make birds unique. Using tools and technology, students will learn to identify local species and investigate environmental changes that impact bird behavior. Participants will submit checklists to eBird that will help scientists track changes in bird distribution and abundance across the globe.

March 10, 9am-2pm: Bug Safari

This training unit explores small creatures with big environmental impacts. On local field expeditions, students will search for bugs, collect specimens, and post photographs to iNaturalist, an online social network for nature research. Working with scientists and other students, participants will learn to identify arthropod species and document habitat conditions that influence our planet’s health.
