Fall Youth Services Workshop – Durango

October 25 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

$25

Please join state library youth services staff for a very interactive day of exploration, learning, idea exchange, and networking! We’ll explore the why’s and how’s of summer programs, the 2020 summer theme of Imagine Your Story (fairy/folk tales, fantasy, mythology), the many improvements to the Collaborative Summer Library Program and the manual, and why and how to seek input from your community when planning your summer program (and all your youth services programming). The Growing Readers Together Expansion Team will present approaches for building relationships with special populations through really knowing your audience, connecting with community organizations,  dreaming big, and inspiring change. Following that, an interactive session will give you ideas to demonstrate easy ways to engage our youngest library patrons and their caregivers, whether parents, grandparents, or teen baby-sitters, and help you with talking points about how libraries empower and support life-long learning and growth.

Unlike the past few years, this time around we will need to charge $25 to attend these workshops to cover lunch and a light breakfast. If you prefer to bring your own food, there will be no fee. The lunch break will be about 45 minutes.

Here’s a brief description of what the sessions will cover (all 4 will cover the same content), in 3 main sections:

Who’s Watching the Kids This Summer? Intro to Family, Friend and Neighbor Care In the first part of this 2-hour section of the workshop, the Growing Readers Together (GRT) Expansion Team will present the GRT Success Cycle, to guide building relationships with special populations through really knowing your audience, connecting with community organizations, dreaming big, and inspiring change. During the summer months, the childcare landscape shifts and many teens, grandparents, and neighbors find themselves caring for younger children. By investing in relationships with these Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FNN) caregivers now, you set the stage for a summer of learning. In the second part, we will demonstrate easily replicated early literacy games and activities from the Growing Readers Together FFN workshops that can be taught to teen babysitters, grandparents, or other caregivers; or grown into a program of its own.

Summer Program Time!

In this 2-hour section of the workshop, we’ll explore the why’s and how’s of summer programs, including trends in tracking, incentives, and moving from summer reading to summer learning. We’ll look at the many improvements to the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), and then take a fun, interactive dive into the 2020 summer theme of Imagine Your Story (fairy/folk tales, fantasy, mythology), with a look at the artwork and much changed CSLP manual along with lots of brainstorming, hands-on activities, and programming and partnering ideas. So much to explore!

Best. Summer. Ever. How to Create the Summer Program Your Community Wants Ever wonder what your community REALLY wants and needs in youth programming and services? In this 1-hour section of the workshop, we’ll investigate why and how to gather input from your community members of all ages on their needs and desires for a summer program—and library services year-round. From parent focus groups to dot boards in the grocery store to happy hour brainstorming sessions, we’ll look at a variety of ways to seek input about your services. Then we’ll shift to translating that input into do-able programs and services that will be of high interest to your community.
