May 25, 2016 @ 9:00 am - May 26, 2016 @ 4:30 pm

Software Carpentry Workshop

On May Wednesday, May 25th and May 26th, the Colorado Association of Special Libraries (ColASL) will be hosting a “Software Carpentry Workshop”, designed to teach librarians, researchers and graduate students basic computing concepts and skills so that they can get more done in less time, and with less pain. This hands-on workshop will cover basic concepts and tools, including program design, version control, data management, and task automation. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. The two-day curriculum includes:

*   UNIX shell (and how to automate repetitive tasks);

*   Python (and how to grow a program in a modular, testable way);

*   Git and GitHub (and how to track and share work efficiently); and

*   SQL (and the difference between structured and unstructured data).

Participants should bring their own laptop.  For more information on the syllabus, laptop requirements, and the software downloads please go to this workshop’s instructions.
